Local Historian Martin A. Sweeney to Portray Historic Homer Figure<\/b><\/p>\n

Sweeney, retired Homer Central Junior High history teacher and current\u00a0 Historian for the Town and Village of Homer, will portray, in costume, historic Homer figure, William Osborn Stoddard. He will tell the story of how ten-year-old Stoddard discovered a runaway slave in his grandfather’s cellar, learned about Abolitionism, tolerance, and human rights, came to oppose slavery, and ended up working for Abraham Lincoln, “The Great Emancipator.”<\/p>\n

YWCA Art Gallery to Feature Posters Created by GEMS Group<\/b><\/p>\n

Participants are invited to come early to view the display in the back Art Gallery where YWCA will feature posters created by members of teen mentoring group, GEMS (Girls: Empowered, Motivated, Successful). The GEMS chose iconic pictures from black history,\u00a0 reflected on what they mean to them, and with the assistance of artist, Liz Sharp, crafted posters incorporating the images and thoughts. The posters will be on display from January 17 to February 28 in honor of Black History Month.<\/p>\n
