How to Browse More Safely

  • Use Private/Incognito Mode: Before visiting our site, open a "Private" or "Incognito" window in your browser. This prevents the browser from saving a history of the pages you visit.

  • Clear Your History: If you have already visited our site, you may want to manually delete the entries from your browser history.

  • Be Mindful of "Clearing All": Removing your entire history at once can sometimes alert a monitoring partner. It is often safer to delete only the specific pages you visited on our site.

  • Use a Safer Device: If you feel your personal device is being monitored, consider using a computer at a public library or a trusted friend’s house.

It is technically impossible for a WordPress plugin (or any website) to delete a user's browsing history. For security reasons, modern browsers do not allow websites to access or modify a user's private history logs.

The Safety Exit plugin you are viewing works by providing an immediate redirection to a neutral site to help users quickly hide their activity from someone in the same room. However, as noted in the plugin's FAQ, it cannot erase the record of the visit from the browser's history.

How "Safety Exit" Plugins Actually Work

While they can't delete history, these plugins provide a layer of protection through the following features:

  • Instant Redirection: When clicked, the button immediately redirects the current tab to a generic URL (like Google or a weather site).

  • New Tab Launch: Some versions can also open the neutral site in a new tab or window to further obscure the previous content.

  • Customization: Site owners can change the button's appearance, text, and icons to make it easily accessible for those in crisis.

Critical Limitations to Share with Users

Because the plugin cannot eliminate browsing history, it is vital to inform your visitors of the following:

  • Multi-Page History: If a user clicks through several pages on your site, each of those pages will remain in their browser history even after they use the "Exit" button.

  • Cache and Cookies: Browsers may still store temporary images or data from your site.

  • Private Browsing is Best: The only way to ensure no history is saved is for the user to use Incognito or Private Browsing mode before visiting the site.
