Week Two: Interpersonal Racism

Interpersonal racism happens in everyday interactions where racist attitudes are shown, whether intentionally or not. This topic looks at how it shows up in social settings, workplaces, schools, and public spaces. We’ll talk about how things like microaggressions, racial slurs, and other biases impact people of color personally and feed into larger inequalities. We’ll also discuss ways to recognize and challenge interpersonal racism in daily life.

Week Two Themes

  • Understanding Interpersonal Racism: In this session, we will delve into the concept of interpersonal racism and examine how it influences everyday interactions between individuals. Our discussion will encompass both overt actions, such as the use of racial slurs, and more subtle behaviors, including exclusion or implicit biases. By gaining a deeper understanding of this concept, we can better recognize its impact on those around us and the importance of addressing and challenging such behaviors. This foundational knowledge will prepare us for a more in-depth exploration of the topic throughout the week.
  • The Impact of Implicit Bias: In this session, we’ll focus on understanding implicit biases—unconscious thoughts and stereotypes that influence how we act without us realizing it. We’ll look at how these biases develop and how they can unintentionally cause unfair treatment. By noticing how implicit bias affects our decisions, we can start to question our reactions and create fairer interactions. This session will help you become more aware of your own perceptions.
  • Microaggressions and Their Effects: We will explore microaggressions and examine how seemingly minor comments or actions can profoundly impact. Through real-life examples and firsthand accounts, we will gain a deeper understanding of how microaggressions can accumulate, fostering an environment of exclusion and emotional distress. By learning to identify these subtle behaviors, we can reflect on how our words and actions affect others. The goal of this session is to enhance our sensitivity and responsiveness to microaggressions.
  • Interpersonal Racism in Professional Spaces: We’ll look at how interpersonal racism shows up in workplaces, schools, and other spaces. Using real-life examples, we’ll explore how biased interactions can impact careers, education, and well-being. By recognizing these patterns, we can learn how to address and prevent them in professional and academic settings. The goal is to foster fairness and inclusion in the places where we work and learn.
  • Building Anti-Racist Interpersonal Relationships: On the final day, we will focus on practical strategies for building anti-racist relationships and creating inclusive communities. This includes unlearning harmful behaviors, improving our listening skills, and confronting our own biases. We will take time to reflect on everything we’ve learned throughout the week and set personal goals for continued growth in our daily lives. The goal is to commit to being proactive allies and making a meaningful impact in the communities and circles we are part of.
