YWCA Cortland’s Aid to Victims of Violence (AVV) Program is committed to providing comprehensive support and advocacy for individuals impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, and other crimes.

Volunteers are a vital part of our mission, and we are recruiting volunteers for the AVV Program to provide administrative and crisis hotline support as well as community outreach duties. Community members can choose a role that best fits their interests. All volunteers will be trained and supported by AVV staff throughout their service.

Volunteer opportunities include the below three roles. Interested parties can request a volunteer application by contacting AVV’s Community Coordinator Stefania Buta at sbuta@cortlandywca.org.

Administrative Support Volunteer

  • Assisting with data entry and spreadsheet updating
  • Assisting staff with copying, scanning, filing, and other clerical tasks
  • Creating packets, folders, or mailings for client services, events, and programming
  • Inventorying and organizing office supplies

Ideal for: Detail-oriented individuals who are dependable, organized, and want to make a meaningful contribution to the daily operations of the program.

Crisis Hotline Volunteer

Role Summary: Provide compassionate, confidential support to individuals calling the 24/7 crisis hotline. Volunteers in this role will require extensive training, should be comfortable with emotionally intense conversations, and can remain calm while following protocol.

  • Answering calls to the crisis hotline with empathy and professionalism
  • Actively listening to callers and providing emotional support, resources, and safety planning
  • Documenting call information accurately and maintaining confidentiality
  • Collaborating with staff for follow-up and support services

Ideal for: Empathetic, calm individuals with strong listening skills who want to provide direct support for those in crisis. This role is a great opportunity for individuals pursuing degrees in social work, psychology, nursing, or counseling services.

Community Outreach Volunteer

Role Summary: Serve as a representative of the agency in the community, helping to raise awareness of our program and promote services. Outreach volunteers play a crucial role in expanding our program’s reach to help more people!

  • Representing AVV at informational tables in schools, colleges, libraries, resource fairs, and other community events
  • Assisting with awareness campaigns (e.g. Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Sexual Assault Awareness Month)
  • Distributing informational materials to community partners

Ideal for: Enthusiastic and outgoing individuals who enjoy engaging with others in their community.
